Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Redlands Men's Water Polo wins first SCIAC road game at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team (6-10, 2-0 SCIAC) edged Chapman University 11-9 in their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) road game of the season Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs and Panthers traded goals the entire first half with Redlands leading 5-4 at intermission. Max Wagener (Piedmont, CA) scored the opener followed by Harrison DeCourcy (Alameda, CA) converting on a powerplay with 1:35 left in the first period. Nicolas Fedotov (Miami Beach, FL) would give the Bulldogs the 3-2 lead after eight minutes.

Spencer Clinton (Cypress, CA) and Tanner Whitson (St. Louis, MO) added another two tallies in the second to help keep the U of R ahead at the half.

The breathing room came in the third when Dean Moody (Camarillo, CA) and Wagener both found the back of the net to make it a 3-0 Bulldog run going back to the end of the second quarter moving the score to 7-4.

After not scoring for the final 4:47 of the third, and allowing Chapman to pull back within one, Wagener started the fourth quarter off with a man-up connection before Ron Gvishi (Kiryat Tivon, Israel) made it the largest margin of the game at four, 9-5.

Chapman did not go away, though, responding with two unanswered goals for the first time as it was back to a two-goal differential.  Thirty seconds later after the second Panther goal Wagener scored the eventual game-winner with 2:26 left.

Wagener would add one more to help the Bulldogs get a hard fought road win.

Clinton finished with a goal and three drawn exclusions, Wagener added five goals, and Moody with a goal, two assists, and six steals. In the goal Roberto Barrera (Guanajuato, Mexico) made 16 saves, while assisting on a goal and taking away possession four times. Adam Lambert (St. Louis, MO) and Whitson also had two assists each.

Redlands returns to the Thompson Aquatic Center this Saturday, October 12 as they host Whittier College at 11:00 a.m.
