REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (11-13, 6-10 SCIAC) honored senior Maddy Schonauer (Bakersfield, CA) before they swept the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 Saturday night inside Currier Gym.
The Bulldogs held a 9-6 lead after winning five-straight points thanks to a trio of Kaegan Wherry (Englewood, CO) kills and two more from Avery Aminoff (Alexandria, VA). Makenna Van Hofwegen (Buckeye, AZ) had the first two assists with Lali Makaiwi (Las Vegas, NV) and Elizabeth Moyer (Surprise, AZ) both adding another.
The Beavers did not go away as they pulled within one before the Bulldogs finished off the set with a 9-3 surge.
It was all Redlands to start the second period, holding a 7-2 lead thanks to kills from Esha Ball (Fresno, CA), Emma Murphy (South Jordan, UT), and Isabella Garey (Alexandria, VA). Schonauer had assists on all four kills.
The quick start ended in a strong finish as Redlands held the lead from start to finish never letting Caltech get any closer than four points.
Trailing 14-12 in the third a service error from Caltech sparked a 7-2 run by the U of R. From that point forward their lead was at least two as they took the set 25-19 and the season sweep.
Schonauer finished her career with a 16-assist match. She also had a kill and four digs. Van Hofwegen's 21 assists gives her six 20-assist matches in her freshman season. Wherry finished with a match-high 17 kills.
Redlands' 11 wins this year are the most since 2018 and their six Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) wins are the most since 2010.
