Bulldog Women's Basketball comes up short against No. 14 Smith

REDLANDS, Calif. – In another match-up with a national semifinalist from last season the University of Redlands Women's Basketball team (2-1) fell 56-51 to Division III national runner-up Smith College Friday evening.

The Bulldogs were in an early 4-0 hole before an 8-2 run put them up four thanks to baskets by Avery Shiring (Yorba Linda, CA), Colbi Zorich (Kenmore, WA), followed by another four points from Leila Hosn (Seattle, WA).

A pair of Alex Facelo (San Jose, CA) free throws at the four minute mark had the U of R up four and they would hold a 13-10 lead after 10 minutes following an AJ Wick (Henderson, NV) free throw.

Leaya McKinney (Sedalia, CO) put Redlands back on top after Smith tied the game at 20, but the Pioneers would score six of the final 11 points to lead by one, 26-25, at the half.

Redlands would only score seven points in the third quarter as they went into the final period trailing by six. They then found themselves down by their largest deficit of the game at, 40-32, early in the fourth.

The next five points, however, would come from Hosn and Wick as they were within a possession less than two minutes after trailing by three.

With 1:42 on the clock Facelo drew a foul and knocked down both free throws to tie the game at 46.

The Pioneers though would ice the game as they made six of their eight free throws to secure the win.

Both offenses struggled as the Bulldog defense held Smith to a slash line of 36.1%/16.7%/66.7% (field goal percentage, three-point percentage, free throw percentage). On the other side Redlands had a line of 25%/25.9%/66.7%.

Facelo made a few big threes in the second half in route to a game-high 14 points. Hosn had 10 points, six rebounds, and five assists and Wick and Zorich each added 12 rebounds.

UT Dallas comes to Currier Gym for a 5:00 p.m. tip off tomorrow, Saturday, November 16.
