REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (9-13, 4-10 SCIAC) needed a win against Pomona-Pitzer Tuesday night inside Currier Gym to stay in contention for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament, but a sweep at the hands of the Sagehens eliminated them.
Makaila Brooks (Las Vegas, NV) opened the match for the Bulldogs with all three points thanks to a pair of kills and an ace. Avery Aminoff (Alexandria, VA) then had a kill on an overpass that tied the set at four.
Down by four, 12-8, Makenna Van Hofwegen (Buckeye, AZ) found Brooks and Kaegan Wherry (Englewood, CO) twice to draw the U of R within one, 13-12. An Emma Murphy (South Jordam, UT) kill, off a Julia Hodges (Virginia Beach, VA) assist, brought the deficit to two, 20-18, but the Sagehens finished on a 5-0 run to take the opening set.
Redlands held a 14-13 lead in the second set after Hodges took advantage of a free ball, but much like the first set, Pomona-Pitzer took control late to win 25-16.
It looked like the Sagehens would take a lopsided third set, leading 9-4, but the Bulldogs had other plans going on an 8-2 run that put them ahead 12-11. During the surge Van Hofwegen had two aces, Brooks had two kills and an assisted block, and Aminoff combined on that assisted block.
A few points later a Sagehen error made it 16-13 Bulldogs, which forced a Pomona-Pitzer timeout. But out of the break PP would score five-straight to reclaim the lead.
Redlands, however, did not quit, as they pulled with one twice, 22-21 and 23-22, but the comeback bid would fall short as the Sagehens would win 25-18, 25-16, 25-22.
The Bulldogs play their final road match of the season at Occidental College this Friday, November 8 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
