REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Baseball team (2-1) split their doubleheader with McMurry University Saturday falling 9-2 in Game 1 before pulling out a 6-4 win in Game 2 helping them take the series with the War Hawks.
Game 1: L, 9-2
The Bulldogs got on the board first thanks to Sebastian Mejorado (Oceanside, CA) who drove in Luke De Vries (Irvine, CA) on a sacrifice fly. But the War Hawks would score eight unanswered runs through the top of the sixth.
In the bottom half of that same inning Nathan Miller (San Jose, CA) would hit an RBI-single through the left side scoring Mejorado.
Kyler Bacosa (San Jose, CA) got the start on the mound but was forced out of the game giving way to Joe Godoy (Commerce, CA) who came in relief throwing 5.1 innings striking out nine of the 21 batters he faced as he kept the Bulldogs in it.
De Vries finished the game 1-for-2 with a run scored and two walks, Jared Anderson (Gilbert, AZ) was 2-for-5 and Mejorado was 1-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk.
Game 2: W, 6-4
In the second game of the twin bill the War Hawks jumped out ahead with an infield single in the third before Redlands responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double from Mejorado and a second run scoring on an error.
Tyler Preece (Bellevue, WA) then singled home Mejorado giving UR a 3-1 lead after three.
Redlands was able to get enough room between themselves and McMurry in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings after De Vries scored on a passed ball, Kaiya Saito (Bellevue, WA) drove in Gabriel Ceja (Long Beach, CA), and Anderson came across on an error.
Nathan Buchan (Mercer Island, WA) came up with a big start as he threw seven innings giving up just two runs to go with eight strikeouts on only 90 pitches. Miles Lu (San Jose, CA) ended the final two innings with two strikeouts as he secured the win.
Mejorado was again stellar at the plate going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, De Vries was 1-for-3 scoring twice and drawing a walk, and Saito was 1-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk.
The Bulldogs host LeTourneau University next Friday and Saturday with game one on Friday at 2:00 p.m. and then a doubleheader on Saturday that starts at 11:00 a.m.
