REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team got their 2024 season off on a high note sweeping No. 37 UC Santa Cruz 7-0 at the Verdieck Tennis Center Saturday morning.
The match was played under Division I/II format with the doubles sets being played to six and worth one point (Team winning majority earns the point).
Redlands opened up the match with a clean sweep in doubles as
Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) and
Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) at No. 3 put the first point up on the board winning 6-0.
Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) and
Livi Rockwood (Park City, UT) followed with a 6-4 win at the top spot giving the Maroon and Grey the early 1-0 match lead. The final match on was
Rayna Sugai (Las Vegas, NV) and
Kaylin Kielty (Canyon Lake, CA) at No. 2 who came back from a 3-0 deficit to win 6-4.
In singles the Bulldogs dominated taking all six spots coming in straight sets. L. Rockwood added the second point at No. 3 winning 6-2, 6-1, Kielty gave up just two games combined winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 and the clinch would come at No. 4 from Sugai who cruised 6-1, 6-1.
Other matches that finished included junior transfer
Deja Brown (San Diego, CA) at No. 6 who used a break in the first set to win 6-4, 6-0, Brady at No. 2 who would pull out a 6-1, 7-5 win and Deng at the top spot who handled her opponent 6-2, 6-3.
Redlands returns to the courts Tuesday, February 20 when they host No. 31 Brandeis University beginning at 5:00pm.
