REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Tennis team picked up their third win on the season Friday evening holding off No. 29 University of Mary Washington 7-2 at the Verdieck Tennis Center.
It was an early test for the Bulldogs finding themselves up 2-1 after doubles despite getting a challenge from the Eagles.
Dominic Anderson (Brisbane, Australia) and
Jack Fanshawe (Brisbane, Australia) got to work quickly winning at No. 3 8-1 giving UR an early point. The team of
Nico Calixto (Cathedral City, CA) and
Yoav Nir (Tel Aviv, Israel) made it 2-0 following an 8-4 decision at No. 2.
The third point would go to Mary Washington as the Bulldogs' top team of
MJ Abarca (Chula Vista, CA) and
Jax Ledwith (West Linn, OR) would fall 8-6 allowing the Eagles to head into singles down a point.
In singles the Maroon and Grey took five of six. First-Year
Cooper Whittington (Lake Oswego, OR) extended the lead with a straight sets win at No. 6 6-1, 6-1. Anderson followed with another win at No. 3 rolling 6-2, 6-4 and the clinch came at No. 1 from First-Year Calixto who pulled out an upset win over No. 38 Rishi Charan-Shankar 6-3, 7-5.
The Eagles stopped the bleeding at No. 4 as First-Year
Gustavo Marcanth (Redondo Beach, CA) would get edged 6-4, 6-4 giving UMW their second point. But that momentum would not carry over as Ledwith would get UR back on track with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 moving the score to 6-2. The last match on came at No. 2 from Nir who battled from a set down to pull out a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 10-8 win.
