REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Tennis team threatened the No. 7 ranked Stags of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Saturday morning falling 6-3 at the Biszantz Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs move to 3-2, 1-1 SCIAC, while Claremont-M-S improves to 6-3, 1-0 SCIAC.
Redlands jumped all over the Stags quickly taking two of three in doubles giving them an early wake-up call.
Jax Ledwith (West Linn, OR) and
MJ Abarca (Chula Vista, CA) would fall at No. 1 8-3 giving CMS an early lead. UR tied things up right after that thanks to
Dominic Anderson (Brisbane, Australia) and
Jack Fanshawe (Brisbane, Australia) at No. 3 who would use a late break to take an 8-6 decision. The go-ahead point came at No. 2 from
Nico Calixto (Cathedral City, CA) and
Yoav Nir (Tel Aviv, Israel) who would pull out an 8-7 (4) breaker to give the Bulldogs an early advantage.
Needing only three points to pull off one of the program's biggest upsets Redlands would see the Stags take five of six to complete the comeback with three of the singles matches going the distance.
Nir faced a tough task at No. 2 falling 6-1, 6-0 to Ian Freer allowing CMS to level the match. The other two matches that were straight sets came at No. 5 as Ledwith would fall 7-5, 7-5 to No. 23 Anirudh Gupta and Anderson who would drop a 6-4, 7-6 (2) decision at No. 3. After that the match was a grind with the other three going to three sets. Calixto battled back from a set down against No. 9 Advik Mareedu only to fall 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
Cooper Whittington (Lake Oswego, OR) had opportunities against Josh Kim at No. 6 coming from a set down to level things at 6-2, 6-7 (4), but could not carry the momentum into the third falling 6-3.
The last match on was No. 34
Gustavo Marcanth (Redondo Beach, CA) who also needed three sets against Warren Pham at No. 4. The First-Year lost the first set in a breaker 7-6 (6) but would power his way back to take the next two 6-2, 6-4 giving UR their third point on the morning.
Redlands returns to the courts this week for four matches all occurring at the Verdieck Tennis Center beginning with a match-up against Division I Boston University on Tuesday, March 12 beginning at 5:00pm.
