Celine Flaig tallies six goals as U of R Women's Lacrosse falls late to Occidental

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Lacrosse team (2-4, 0-3 SCIAC) was within a goal of Occidental College in the fourth quarter Thursday evening at Farquhar Field, but the Tigers scored seven of the next eight as the Bulldogs would fall 18-11.

The first quarter was a defensive battle until the three minute mark when Occidental jumped in front 4-1.  Then with :24 seconds remaining Cailin Walker (Portland, OR) scored an unassisted goal to make it a two-goal game.  The first goal came from Ruby Czajkowski (West Hartford, CT) in the opening three minutes of the game that tied things up at 1-1.

Redlands found themselves on top to begin the second quarter following three unanswered as they went from down three to up one, 5-4, with 9:43 on the clock. The first of the three scores came from Celine Flaig (Redondo Beach, CA) who missed the last game against Chapman University. The second and third goals came from Maya Weaver (Tustin, CA) and Flaig for a second time.

The Tigers looked like they were creating some distance between themselves and the Bulldogs late in the half, but Czajkowski converted an important goal in the final two minutes as Walker picked up the assist helping UR head into the half tailing by only one, 8-7.

In the opening minute and a half of the third quarter Walker scored an unassisted goal to even the game at seven. Occidental would respond once again as they reclaimed a two-goal lead before Flaig was on the receiving end of a Walker assist to make it a one score game again.

Heading into the fourth quarter the Bulldogs found themselves down three, 11-8, their largest deficit since the opening quarter. But Flaig and Czajkowski got Redlands right back into it in the first three minutes as they made it 11-10 Tigers with 12:11 still to play.

Over the final 11 minutes though the Tigers would end the game on a 7-1 run as they held off the Bulldogs for the road win.

Jenna Bradford (Anaheim, CA) finished with four draw controls and two ground balls. Zoe Charum (Glendale, CA) caused two turnovers and collected three ground balls, Czajkowski scored a hat trick, added a ground ball and a caused turnover, Weaver had a goal, six draw controls, and three ground balls, Vivian Reukauf (Corvallis, OR) caused two turnovers, and Flaig finished with a game-high five goals, two ground balls, two caused turnovers, and two draw controls. In goal Alyssa Ashley (Vista, CA) made six saves, had four ground balls, and caused a Panther turnover.

Redlands will stay at home for another Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match-up at 1:00 p.m. this Saturday, March 16 as they host California Lutheran University.
