U of R Baseball wins series with Caltech after road doubleheader split

PASADENA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Baseball team (9-11, 4-8 SCIAC) lost game one of their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) doubleheader 4-3 at the California Institute of Technology before a great pitching performance carried them to a 3-1 win in game two helping them secure their first conference series.

Game 1 (L, 4-3)

After both pitching staffs held the offenses scoreless through four, Mason Chetcuti (Redwood City, CA) got the offense going for the Bulldogs doubling to right center scoring Jake Burgess (Riverside, CA).

The Beavers, though, would respond with three in the sixth that moved the score to 3-1.

Redlands' offense was able to make it a one-run game in the ninth when Luke De Vries (Irvine, CA) grounded out scoring a runner from third making it 4-2. Jared Anderson (Gilbert, AZ) then reached on an error by the third baseman as Chetcuti scored to bring the lead run to the plate. Tyler Preece (Bellevue, WA) would double to left, but Anderson would be held at third, which is where he was stranded as the Maroon and Grey left the tying and lead runners on base.

Chetcuti had a career day at the plate, going 4-for-4. Preece and Burgess had four of the other six hits as the offense left 10 on the base paths.

Joe Godoy (Commerce, CA) had a solid start, throwing 5.2 innings, while allowing three runs and striking out eight. Jakob Russell (Fontana, CA) ended the game going the final 2.1 innings giving up one run on two hits along with three strikeouts.

Game 2 (W, 3-1)

In Game 2 the Bulldog offense scored another three runs once again, but the pitching held the Beaver offense at bay for the third time.

Preece scored the opening run in the fourth on a double play before De Vries had the game-winning RBI in the fifth as he brought home Burgess.

In a one-run game in the eighth Luke Hanson (Escondido, CA) was able to give the pitchers some breathing room as he singled to shortstop scoring Gabriel Ceja (Long Beach, CA) moving the score to 3-1.

Patrick Perez (Ontario, CA) came on for the save in the ninth. Kyler Bacosa (San Jose, CA) started and did not allow a run in four innings, Jack Brown (San Diego, CA) threw one inning and earned the win, and Nathan Buchan (Mercer Island, WA) came out of the bullpen and shut the Beavers out for three innings.

Redlands has now played half of their 24 SCIAC games and will return to non-conference competition this Thursday-Friday, March 21-22 as they head to Arizona for the Tucson Cactus Classic where they will play Carleton College, Bates College, and Wesleyan University.
