REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team took two of three in doubles helping them beat No. 28 Bowdoin College 6-3 at the Verdieck Tennis Center Wednesday night.
Redlands snaps their three-match losing skid improving to 5-3, 0-0 SCIAC, while Bowdoin drops to 4-4, 1-0 NESCAC.
The Polar Bears who were coming off an upset win over No. 13 Babson College (6-3) were tested early by the Maroon and Grey. Redlands grabbed a quick point at No. 1 thanks to
Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) and
Livi Rockwood (Park City, UT) who cruised 8-4. Bowdoin was able to tie things up soon after with a win at No. 3. The team of
Gabby Rockwood (Park City, UT) and
Rayna Sugai (Las Vegas, NV) found themselves in a 7-4 hole, but managed to fight their way back to get within one at 7-6, but could not get the second break back ultimately falling 8-6.
It came down to the No. 2 team of
Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) and
Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) who found themselves serving for the match at 7-6. The Polar Bears managed to get the break forcing a tiebreaker, but that's where their momentum stopped as Brady and O'Brien bounced back to put together a lights out display winning 8-7 (7-1).
This gave UR a 2-1 advantage and they would build off of that taking four of six matches in singles. G. Rockwood competed at No. 6 and she rolled 6-1, 6-2. Brady moved to No. 4 and she gave up just two games as she won 6-1, 6-1. Bowdoin got a point back with a win at No. 2 as L. Rockwood would fall 6-1, 6-2. But after that the Maroon and Grey would take two of the next three matches including the clinch at No. 1 from Deng who would pull out a hard fought 6-2, 6-4 performance.
Sugai continued the run with am epic three-setter at No. 3 going 6-1, 1-6, 7-5. Her opponent was serving for the match at 5-4 in the third but she found a way to pull out the win. The last match on was O'Brien at No. 5 who fought her way back from a set down only to fall in a third set tiebreaker 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (4).
Redlands returns to the court Friday, March 22 hosting No. 9 Williams College at the Verdieck Tennis Center beginning at 3:00pm.
