Maegan Deng leads Bulldog Women’s Tennis against No. 9 Williams College

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team took on a tough Williams College squad ranked No. 9 in Division III Friday afternoon falling 4-1 at the Verdieck Tennis Center.

The match was played to clinch under Division I rules with the Bulldogs taking a point within singles.  In doubles Williams took two of three to grab the first point.  Gabby Rockwood (Park City, UT) and Rayna Sugai (Las Vegas, NV) got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a quick point at No. 3 winning 6-2.  The Ephs tied things up with a point at No. 1 as Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) and Livi Rockwood (Park City, UT) would fall 6-1.  The decisive match came down to No. 2 where Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) and Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) would get edged 6-4. 

In singles Williams grabbed two points at No. 5 and No. 6.  O'Brien would fall 6-2, 6-2 and G. Rockwood would grab three games in a 6-2, 6-1 loss giving the Ephs a 3-0 advantage.  Deng stopped the run with a win at the top spot beating E. Ekstrand in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.  But Williams would take the clinch with a win at No. 2 as L. Rockwood would fall 7-6 (4), 6-4 to Y. Ishikawa. 

The last matches on that were unfinished included Sugai at No. 3 who was in a deadlocked third-set 6-4, 3-6, 5-5 and Brady at No. 4 who was also in a third-set and leading 6-1, 2-6, 5-4.    

Redlands returns to the courts this Saturday, March 30 when they get back to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play traveling to take on Whittier College beginning at 10:00am.
