LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Lacrosse team (6-8, 2-7 SCIAC) was within three goals of Occidental College in the third quarter of their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game Wednesday night, but they would fall, 22-11, after a late run by the Tigers.
The Bulldogs and Tigers were tied early in the opening ten minutes as Redlands received goals from Ruby Czajkowski (West Hartford, CT), Cailin Walker (Portland, OR), and Briannah McGee (Murrieta, CA) with Celine Flaig (Redondo Beach, CA) picking up an assist on McGee's goal.
Occidental would respond with a trio of tallies as they led, 6-3, with 1:10 remaining in the opening quarter. With two seconds left Flaig converted on a free position to make it a two-goal game after one.
In the first five minutes of the second quarter the Bulldog defense held the Tigers scoreless, while Walker found the back of the net to draw UR within one, 6-5.
The final ten minutes of the half would see Occidental score five of the next six goals as they took an 11-6 lead into the break. Walker netted her hat trick with a goal at the 3:36 mark thanks to a free position opportunity.
Three minutes into the second half the Tigers scored two more times as they looked to pull away with a seven-goal lead, 13-6. But Flaig and company, however, did not go away quietly as Maya Weaver (Tustin, CA) found Czajkowski for a goal to end the 7-1 Occidental run at the 10:43 mark of the third.
Just over a minute later Flaig scored her first of three consecutive goals as she extended the run to 4-0 moving the score to 13-10 with 6:04 still to play.
That final Flaig goal would be the final score of the quarter for Redlands as they would head to the fourth trailing 16-10.
The final period would belong to the Tigers as they scored six times and held a 12-goal lead before Walker added one final connection with 1:55 left in the game.
Flaig and Walker each had three free position goals and four goals in total. Walker added three draw controls too. Weaver finished with an assist, one draw control, and one caused turnover.
Redlands will complete their three-game road trip with a match-up against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps this Saturday, April 13 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
