AZUSA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Baseball team (17-16, 9-12 SCIAC) was swept in their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) doubleheader with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Saturday losing game one 9-6 before falling 13-3 in game two.
Game 1 (L, 9-6)
Mason Chetcuti (Redwood City, CA) got UR on the scoreboard thanks to an RBI infield single to second that allowed Luke De Vries (Irvine, CA) to score.
That was the lone lead of the game for Redlands as CMS came back to score the next seven runs holding a six-run lead until the fifth when Tyler Preece (Bellevue, WA) singled to center scoring Sean McCance (Irvine, CA).
Redlands continued to chip away in the sixth with a Will Daniels (Crestline, CA) sacrifice fly to right as Nathan Miller (San Jose, CA) came in to make it a 7-3 deficit.
Following another scoreless inning from the bullpen, this time from Jack Brown (San Diego, CA), Redlands was able to double their run total to six as they pulled within one, 7-6.
The three-run seventh came from Sebastian Mejorado (Oceanside, CA) who scored on a passed ball, Gabriel Ceja (Long Beach, CA) who singled to center scoring Chetcuti, and then Miller scored on a second passed ball.
Those three runs, though, were the last ones to come across for the Bulldogs as they would allow two final runs to the Stags as the series was evened at one game apiece.
Ceja led the way by reaching four times thanks to three hits and a walk. Chetcuti had two hits, a run scored, and an RBI. Preece reached base three times with a hit and two walks.
Kethan Efron (Henderson, NV) was the first out of the bullpen and he threw 3.2 scoreless innings on only 36 pitches. Ryan Rhoades (San Diego, CA) made his first appearance in a month and threw the final 0.2 innings with no runs allowed.
Game 2 (L, 13-3 | 7-Innings)
After conceding another early lead to the Stags, the Bulldogs scored three times in the third to get within one.
Preece got Redlands on the board with an RBI-double to left that scored Will Cell (Seattle, WA). Mejorado then grounded out allowing Jared Anderson (Gilbert, AZ) to take the final 90 feet. The last run of the inning came thanks to a clutch two-out single from Chetcuti.
CMS responded an inning later in the fourth with five runs on three hits. They then put the game away in the fifth when they pushed four across the plate on five hits.
In the final three innings the Bulldog offense managed only two hits, both singles, as the Maroon and Grey were unable to cut into the 10-run lead to avoid the run-rule finish.
Anderson and Ceja went 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively. Gavin Duenez (Redlands, CA) finished the final 1.1 innings without allowing a run and struck out two Stags after the previous three pitchers combined for 13 runs allowed in 4.2 innings.
Redlands will head to Washington for a four-game series against Whitman College next Friday-Saturday, April 19-20. These are the final non-conference games of the season for the Bulldogs and the first true road games. First pitch of game one both days is at 12:00 p.m. (noon).
