CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team ran into a tough test with No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer within Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play Friday afternoon falling 8-1.
The Bulldogs drop to 8-5, 3-1 SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer improves to 14-3, 3-0 SCIAC.
Redlands remained close following doubles picking up a point at the top spot behind a tiebreak win from
Livi Rockwood (Park City, UT) and
Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) who won 8-7 (5) beating the No. 2 ranked team in the West Region. The other two points went to the Sagehens as
Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) and
Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) would fall 8-3 at No. 2 doubles followed by
Gabby Rockwood (Park City, UT) and
Rayna Sugai (Las Vegas, NV) falling in a tight 8-5 match at No. 3.
In singles it was all Pomona-Pitzer with one match going the distance. G. Rockwood was the first off at No. 5 falling 6-1, 6-1 and
Deja Brown would follow at No. 6 losing 6-3, 6-0. The clinch came at No. 1 with Deng putting up a fight against Angie Zhou, ranked No. 2 in the West Region and No. 18 Nationally dropping a break in each set 6-4, 6-3.
L. Rockwood had a good match at No. 3 collecting six games in a 6-2, 6-4 loss going against the No. 8 ranked player in the West Region. Brady also competed well at No. 4 falling 6-4, 7-5 to the No. 19 ranked player in Division III. The last match on was Sugai at No. 2 who would fight her way back from a set down to force a third ultimately falling 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.
Redlands returns to the court next week either Tuesday or Wednesday, April 16-17 when they take on California Lutheran University beginning at 3:00pm in Thousand Oaks, CA.
