WHITTIER, Calif. – The No. 8 ranked University of Redlands Women's Tennis team opened p Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play Monday sweeping Whittier College 9-0 at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.
Redlands improves to 6-4, 1-0 SCIAC, while Whittier drops to 2-8, 0-1 SCIAC.
It was a quick start for the Bulldogs giving up just two games in doubles across the three lines.
Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) and
Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) rolled 8-0 at No. 2 followed by
Gabby Rockwood (Park City, UT) and
Rayna Sugai (Las Vegas, NV) at No. 3 who won 8-0 as well. The last match on came at the top spot as
Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) and
Livi Rockwood (Park City, UT) would win 8-2 claiming the sweep.
The momentum carried over into singles with the U of R taking all six spots.
Deja Brown (San Diego, CA) was moved into the singles rotation at No. 6 and was first off winning 6-0, 6-0 and Sugai followed with the clinch at No. 3 cruising 6-0, 6-1. L. Rockwood gave up a pair of games in each set at No. 2 but was never in trouble winning 6-2, 6-2.
Deng continues her dominant first-year playing at No. 1 as she was the fourth off winning 6-0, 6-2. O'Brien got her first taste at No. 4 taking her match in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 and G. Rockwood would wrap up the sweep holding on for a solid 6-2, 6-4 win.
Redlands remains on the road this Friday, April 5 when they travel to take on No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps beginning at 3:30pm.
