WHITTIER, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Tennis team picked up their second conference win Tuesday night cruising past Whittier College 9-0 at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.
Redlands improves to 9-5, 2-1 SCIAC, while Whittier remains winless at 0-10, 0-1 SCIAC.
It was the second straight clean sweep for the Maroon and Grey as they took all three doubles matches before winning all six singles matches in straight sets.
Nico Calixto (Cathedral City, CA) and
Cooper Whittington (Lake Oswego, OR) paired together for the first time at No. 3 winning 8-0 to put UR on the scoreboard quickly.
Dominic Anderson (Brisbane, Australia) and
Gustavo Marcanth (Redondo Beach, CA) followed with an 8-5 win at No. 2. The last match on came at the top spot with
MJ Abarca (Chula Vista, CA) and
Jack Fanshawe (Brisbane, Australia) needing a tiebreaker to give Redlands a 3-0 lead taking it 8-7 (1).
In singles Anderson was the first off at No. 2 taking the opening set 6-2 and was up 4-1 in the second before his opponent retired due to injury. The clinch came at No. 3 from Marcanth who rolled 6-1, 6-2. Whittington moved into the No. 5 slot and used a break in each set to win 6-4, 6-4 moving the score to 6-0.
Josh Davydov (Bellevue, WA) played at No. 4 for the first time this season and he was dominant winning 6-1, 6-1. Calixto at the top spot continues his impressive freshman campaign taking his match 6-2, 6-3 and Fanshawe who saw action in the singles lineup for the first time would pick up the sweep taking his match at No. 6 6-3, 7-6 (7).
Redlands returns to the court this Saturday, April 6 when they host No. 40 Chapman University beginning at 2:00pm.
