Redlands Baseball sweeps doubleheader with Whittier to win third-straight series

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Baseball team (16-14, 7-10 SCIAC) won both games of their home Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) doubleheader with Whittier College on Saturday as they took Game 1 8-1 and Game 2 10-8.

Game 1 (W, 8-1)

Bulldog starter Miles Lu (San Jose, CA) was fantastic on the mound in his first collegiate start throwing seven innings allowing only one run and scattering four hits as he picked up his third win on the season.

After scoring once in the first game of the series, Luke De Vries (Irvine, CA), Jared Anderson (Gilbert, AZ), and Tyler Preece (Bellevue, WA) quadrupled that as they led the way during the Bulldogs four-run third. De Vries started it with an RBI single that scored Mason Chetcuti (Redwood City, CA). Will Cell (Seattle, WA) then scored on a wild pitch in front of an RBI triple from Anderson and a groundout from Preece.

In the fourth Chetcuti plated Jake Burgess (Riverside, CA) with a single through the left side extending the lead to 5-0. Later in the inning Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to right that allowed Sebastian Mejorado (Oceanside, CA) to score.

Nathan Miller (San Jose, CA) had an RBI single in the fifth, as did Anderson in the sixth.

Anderson finished with three RBI's and reached base three times, while Mejorado had a 2-for-5 game and Chetcuti was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

Jakob Russell (Fontana, CA) threw the final two innings and struck out three Poets.

Game 2 (W, 10-8)

Whittier got off to the fast start int he second game of the twin bill, going in front 4-0 after an inning and a half. Redlands, though, got all four back in the bottom half of the second as Chetcuti hit a two-run home run to left, his first as a Bulldog, followed by De Vries walking with the base loaded, and Anderson grounding out bringing in Sean McCance (Irvine, CA).

The Poets responded with two runs the very next inning on a pair of singles.

De Vries brought the Bulldogs within one in the fourth on an RBI double that plated Cell. De Vries then scored on a balk to tie the game at six. The go-ahead run came home on a Miller RBI single to right as Mejorado came across.

Following the third tie of the game in the fifth, Redlands put the game away in the bottom half with an RBI triple from McCance and an infield RBI single for Mejorado as Redlands led 10-7 after five.

The key for the Bulldogs' win was their relief pitching, Nathan Buchan (Mercer Island, WA) came in and threw 5.1 innings with only two earned runs and four strikeouts for his third win on the season, while Patrick Perez (Ontario, CA) got a five-out save.

Redlands will now prepare to start a three-game series with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps next weekend beginning with a single game at The Yard on Friday, April 12 beginning at 3:00 p.m.
