Rayna Sugai wins Ojai Tennis Championship Singles Title

OJAI, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team competed in the 122nd Annual Ojai Tennis Championships this past week sending six players to compete in both singles and doubles.  The Bulldogs had three of four players in the singles semi-finals and both players in the singles final.

Singles

Rayna Sugai (Las Vegas, NV) led the contingent of Bulldogs competing in singles.  She came in as the No. 2 seed and would go four rounds before winning the singles title.  She had a bye in the opening round before rolling 6-2, 6-0 against Malvika Suryavanshi (Whittier College) and Chanel Zeraatkar (Whittier College).  In the Semi-Finals she then beat the No. 4 seed Elina Shalaev (Occidental College).  In the finals she was matched-up against fellow teammate Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) and what a match it was coming from a set down to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Brady was the No. 5 seed in the draw and after an opening bye would beat Kylee Limpias (Cal Lutheran) 6-0, 6-1, No. 7 Sebaga Kombo (Occidental College) 7-5, 6-1 and then fellow teammate Deja Brown (San Diego, CA) in the Semi-Finals needing three-sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Brown was tabbed the No. 5 seed and would open with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Alexis Matabuena (Occidental College) in the Round of 16.  She then beat fellow teammate Lindsay Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) in the Quarterfinals 6-3, 7-5 to earn her spot in one of two semi-finals. 

Whelan grabbed an opening win in the Round of 32 beating Madison Ford (Cal Lutheran) 6-4, 1-0 (Ret. Injury) and would follow that up beating Mathilde Depery (Occidental College) 6-3, 7-5 before falling to Brown.

Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) also competed in the singles draw but was unable to get out of the Round 16 falling in three-sets to Anya Rajan (Cal Lutheran) 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Doubles

Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) elected to just play doubles on the week and paired up with Sugai.  But they were unable to get past Lauren Sebastian/Luisa Garcia (Cal Lutheran) in the Quarterfinals falling 8-6. 

Brown and Whelan were put together as a duo for the first time and they pulled out an opening 8-2 win in the Round of 16 beating Malvika Suryavanshi/Inez Meraz-Lerman (Whittier College).  But the very next round they would fall 8-1 to the top seed Carmen Bufkin/Mina Ahmadi (Cal Lutheran). 

The third team the Bulldogs had play was O'Brien and Brady who were the No. 2 seed.  They had an opening bye before rolling 8-1 in the Round of 16 against Alexis Matabuena/Mathilde Depery (Occidental College).  But their run would end after that falling 8-4 to Elina Shalaev/Sebaga Kombo (Occidental College) in the Semi-Finals.     
 
Redlands prepares for their opening round match-up in the upcoming Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament.  The Bulldogs are the No. 3 seed and will travel to take on No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday, May 2 beginning at 4:00pm.
