CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Tennis team saw their NCAA Division III National Championship run end Saturday in the Regional final following a 5-1 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
The Bulldogs end the season 14-8, 5-2 SCIAC, while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps improves to 27-3, 9-0 SCIAC.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps came out of doubles with a slight edge 2-1. In a match-up between two nationally ranked opponents at No. 1 the Bulldogs'
Nico Calixto (Cathedral City, CA) and
Yoav Nir (Tel Aviv, Israel) would fall 8-2.
Dominic Anderson (Brisbane, Australia) and
Gustavo Marcanth (Redondo Beach, CA) were second off at No. 3 leveling the match at 1-1 following an 8-4 victory. But the advantage would go to CMS heading into singles as
MJ Abarca (Chula Vista, CA) and
Jack Fanshawe (Brisbane, Australia) at No. 2 who would get edged 8-3.
In singles Redlands tried to create some fireworks but could not gain any traction as the Stags would win three straight to grab the clinch. Calixto fell 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 to the No. 2 ranked player in Division III.
Josh Davydov (Bellevue. WA) would be the next off at No. 4 again taking on Anirudh Gupta but would fall 6-2, 6-1. The fifth point came at No. 3 from Marcanth who after falling 6-0 in the opening set would attempt a comeback in the second only to fall 6-4.
The other matches on that were unfinished included Anderson at No. 2 who was down a set but up in the second 6-2, 3-4, Nir at No. 5 who was down 6-3, 5-3, and
Jax Ledwith (West Linn, OR) at No. 6 who was down 6-4, 4-2.
It's now time for the Bulldogs to begin prepping for the NCAA Division III National Championship Individual Tournament with Calixto and Yir representing the Maroon and Grey. Calixto will play singles and will team up with Nir to play doubles. The event will begin May 26 in St. Louis, MO.
