Bulldog Women’s Tennis falls to No. 4 Wesleyan in NCAA Division III Round of 16

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team saw their run at the 2024 NCAA Division III National Championships come to an end Sunday falling 5-1 to the regional host and No. 4 ranked Wesleyan University.  Redlands finishes the season 12-8, 5-2 SCIAC.   

Redlands put some pressure early on the Cardinals grabbing a point at No. 2 doubles with Gabby Rockwood (Park City, UT) and Rayna Sugai (Las Vegas, NV) winning 8-5.  But Wesleyan would come back with the other two points with Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) and Livi Rockwood (Park City, UT) falling 8-2 at the top spot and Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) and Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) dropping an 8-2 decision.

In singles it was competitive, but Wesleyan was able to grab three points to clinch the win.  Deja Brown (San Diego, CA) at No. 5 after dropping the opening set 6-0 battled back in the second only to fall 7-5.  G. Rockwood at No. 6 would drop in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 giving the Cardinals their fourth point.  The clinch came at No. 2 with Sugai putting together a strong run before dropping 6-3, 6-2. 

The other matches on when the match was called included Deng being locked at a set a piece 4-6, 6-2 at No. 1, Brady at No. 4 who was also tied at a set a piece 7-6, 0-6, and L. Rockwood who was leading also playing a breaker in the first set 7-6, 4-4. 

It's now time for the Bulldogs to begin prepping for the NCAA Division III National Championship Individual Tournament with Deng and L. Rockwood representing the Maroon and Grey.  Deng will play the singles draw and compete in doubles with L. Rockwood.  The event will begin May 26 in St. Louis, MO.
