REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Baseball team (20-19, 11-12 SCIAC) took both games of their doubleheader with Occidental College Saturday, which included a walk-off in extra innings in Game 2 as the Bulldogs honored their six seniors Jared Anderson (Gilbert, AZ), Tyler Reiter (San Diego, CA), Julian Zuniga (San Diego, CA), Ryan Rhoades (San Diego, CA), Will Daniels (Crestline, CA), and Patrick Perez (Ontario, CA) prior to the games.
Game 1 (W, 11-1 | 8-Innings)
The Bulldogs led from the third inning on in the first game. Their first run came on a fielder's choice error that allowed Luke De Vries (Irvine, CA) to score. Sebastian Mejorado (Oceanside, CA) then doubled home Anderson. The third run of the inning came from Daniels who singled to right.
Tyler Preece (Bellevue, WA) then homered to left on the first pitch of the fifth inning.
Starting pitcher Reiter had a no-hitter through 6.1 innings, but the Tigers would break it up and the shutout with a solo shot.
Redlands earned four runs in the bottom half of the seventh when Will Cell (Seattle, WA) doubled home Jake Burgess (Riverside, CA) and Gabriel Ceja (Long Beach, CA). Anderson also picked up a pair of RBI's with a base hit that plated Cell and Kaiya Saito (Bellevue, WA).
In the eighth the Maroon and Grey ended the game early with two runs to secure the run-rule victory. De Vries doubled home Burgess and Anderson singled home Cell for the game-ending run.
At the top of the order De Vries and Anderson combined to go 7-for-11 with two runs scored and five RBI's. Cell had two hits, two runs, and two RBI's.
Reiter finished his last appearance as a Bulldog going 8.0 Innings giving up just one run to go with eight strikeouts, while securing his seventh victory of the season.
Game 2 (W, 5-4 | 10-Innings)
After an offensive first game, it was a pitchers dual in Game 2. Redlands found themselves on top 3-1 after seven innings thanks to an RBI in the first from Anderson, a Nathan Miller (San Jose, CA) sacrifice fly in the fourth, and a fielding error at first in the fifth that made it 3-0.
With only two runs scored in 16 innings, Occidental brought home three in the top of the eighth as they went in front for the first time, 4-3.
In the next half inning Mason Chetcuti (Redwood City, CA) hit into a fielder's choice that tied the game at four.
After both teams failed to win it in the ninth, De Vries had the walk-off hit in the 10th with two outs as Patrick Perez (Ontario, CA), who doubled with no one on, and two outs, would score the game-winning run.
De Vries continued his hot hitting with three more base hits. On the mound Rhoades started and threw 2.1 scoreless innings. Nathan Buchan (Mercer Island, WA) then followed with three innings with only one unearned run. After Jakob Russell (Fontana, CA) struck out four across 2.1 innings, Perez moved from designated hitter to pitcher and despite not securing the save, earned the win after throwing the final 2.1 innings.
The Bulldogs end their season Sunday, May 5 as they head to Los Angeles for the series finale beginning at 12:00pm (Noon).
