Redlands Women's Volleyball pushes win streak to five with sweep at Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (5-3, 2-0 SCIAC) beat the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) 3-0 on Saturday afternoon as they move to 2-0 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play for the first time since 2008 when they also defeated Occidental and Caltech.

Elizabeth Moyer (Surprise, AZ) and Avery Aminoff (Alexandria, VA) both had kills early on as the Bulldogs held a 10-4 lead in the opening set.

Thanks to four Beaver errors in the middle of the frame, the Bulldogs led by five, 16-11.

Caltech drew within two, 19-17, but Makaila Brooks (Las Vegas, NV) and Kaegan Wherry (Englewood, CO) added kills that swung the momentum back giving the Bulldogs the advantage before another four Beaver errors handed the UofR the set 25-21.

Wherry had a fast start to the second set as she posted three quick kills to help the Bulldogs hold a 4-3 advantage.

Six points later the Beavers had taken a three point lead, 8-5, after a couple of errors on the Bulldogs side.

Makenna Van Hofwegen (Buckeye, AZ) would then set up Wherry and Aminoff to tie the set at eight. Following kills from Van Hofwegen and Wherry, and a Caltech error, Redlands led 11-10.

After a service error on Redlands, which saw the Beavers tie the set up at 13, the Bulldogs would go on an 8-2 run to take a 21-15 lead.

Despite a responding run of eight of the next eleven points, Wherry put the set away with a kill to win it 25-23.

After an early tie to begin the third set it was all Redlands as they led 6-1 before taking their first double-digit lead of the game at 19-9.

The Beavers continued to push, drawing within single-digits before the Bulldogs scored four of the final five points thanks to a pair of kills from Makena Ruegsegger (Kihei, HI) and the match-ending kill from Kaitlyn DeLong (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) off an assist from Maddy Schonauer (Bakersfield, CA).

The Bulldogs will take their five-game winning streak into a match-up with Whittier College inside Currier Gym next Tuesday, October 1 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
