REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Basketball team (13-3, 5-2 SCIAC) held Pomona-Pitzer to a sub-40 percent shooting and made 18 three-pointers en route to a 94-67 blowout win inside Currier Gym Monday night.
The Sagehens were the first to score, but a Chozen Amadi (Dallas, TX) assisted, Jake Hlywiak (Valencia, CA) three :16 seconds later put the Bulldogs up 3-2, a lead they would hold the rest of the game.
Omari Ferguson (Chicago, Ill.), Dayvon Gates (Carson, CA), and Lucas Gordon (San Marcos, CA) all found their way into the paint, which led to a seven-point lead for the U of R, 13-6.
With a seven-minute three-point "drought", Amadi connected on his first three before Nathan Mattera (Fontana, CA) knocked down his first. The following two buckets would also come from behind the arc as Hlywiak knocked down two for a 29-17 advantage inside of ten minutes to play in the opening half.
Three more Redlands three-pointers and a defensive performance that did not allow any points over the final three minutes put the Bulldogs ahead by 25, 53-28, at the half.
The experienced Sagehens came out of the half playing better defense holding Redlands to 1-of-5 shooting and a 0-for-3 mark from deep in the first two minutes. But Jhace Boston (Bakersfield, CA) would spark the offense hitting a mid-range jumper, while the Maroon and Grey would allow only two baskets to maintain their 20 plus point lead.
From the 13:22 mark to the 7:51 mark Redlands made another five triples, three from Hlywiak and another two from Amadi and Mattera as the lead grew to 28, 79-51.
Evan Lucas (Concord, CA) helped the Bulldogs close out the win with a pair of three-pointers off assists from Christopher Carter (Oceanside, CA) and BJ Taylor (Corona, CA) over the final three minutes of the 27-point win.
That 27-point margin of victory is the largest for the Bulldogs against the Sagehens since 2006. This is also the first season sweep of Pomona-Pitzer since the 2012-13 season when they won all three meetings.
Redlands held the Sagehens to 39.7% shooting and only six made threes. It is the second time holding a team under 40% percent and the eighth time allowing six or fewer threes, posting a 7-1 record in those games.
Hlywiak had a game-high 20 points after reaching double figures only once in the previous six games. Amadi was electric downtown knocking down five three-pointers for 17 points, going 6-of-9 from the field, while Currey quietly had a great game despite not scoring as he had a career-high 10 assists, eight coming in the first half along with three rebounds, three blocks, and a steal.
The Bulldogs begin a three-game road trip beginning with a game in Orange County at Chapman University on Wednesday, January 22 at 7 p.m.
