REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team (9-8, 4-4 SCIAC) held an early lead against Chapman University Wednesday night inside Currier Gym, but cold shooting would lead to an 80-66 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) loss to the Panthers.
Leila Hosn (Seattle, WA) got off to a quick start after drawing a foul and going two-of-two at the line only :22 seconds into the game. AJ Wick (Henderson, NV) then scored in the paint off her own offensive rebound for an early 4-2 lead.
Chapman would tie the game and then go in front at the 8:13 mark. That lead would remain in their possession for the remainder of the game as Redlands struggled to string together stops and buckets.
The Bulldogs trailed by as many as 13 with 1:36 remaining in the half before Hosn again drew a foul and converted both at the line. Colbi Zorich (Kenmore, WA) was then assisted by Alex Facelo (San Jose, CA) on a jumper coming on a fastbreak that would pull the U of R within single digits, but a late Panther jumper made it an 11-point, 39-28, halftime deficit.
After again allowing the lead to balloon, this time to 16 in the first two minutes of the third quarter, the Bulldogs were able to score the final four points of the period thanks to jumpers from Hosn and Wick as it was a manageable 10-point deficit, 56-46, after 30 minutes.
Carly Hicks (Portland, OR) made it an eight-point game with a layup in the paint after Kayden Sanders (Nipomo, CA) forced a turnover to gain possession before grabbing an offensive rebound to extend the possession.
Hosn then made a three at the 7:26 mark, but Chapman went on a 17-8 run down to the 1:12 mark putting the game away.
Hosn finished with a team-high 18 points and five assists. Wick had 12 points, nine rebounds, and two assists.
Facelo was face guarded the majority of the game and got off only five shots, making three of them including one three-pointer. That made three now gives her 53 on the season, the ninth most in program history. She quietly added six steals.
Redlands will head to Los Angeles for their first match-up with Occidental College this Saturday, January 25 at 2:00pm.
