LA VERNE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team (8-5, 3-1 SCIAC) put together a statement win to begin 2025 as they beat the University of La Verne 100-61 on Wednesday night in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action.
The Bulldogs started off slowly allowing six points in the first two minutes. But over the final eight minutes they would hold the Leopards to just ten points, while scoring 25 themselves to take a lead after the opening period.
During the 25-10 run Alex Facelo (San Jose, CA) scored nine points thanks to a trio of threes and Carly Hicks (Portland, OR) added to the three-point barrage with two of her own.
The Leopards did not go away quietly though, scoring the first six points of the second quarter to stay within striking distance. Andrea Perkins (Seal Beach, CA) was then set up by Facelo for a three with the first basket of sixteen unanswered by the U of R that grew the lead to 24, 46-22, with 2:19 left in the first half.
Redlands went into the break up 26 after Facelo knocked down another pair of triples in the final :52 seconds coming off assists from AJ Wick (Henderson, NV).
Hicks continued her hot shooting from deep with a three that made it a 30-point game, 61-31, in the third. That lead would grow to as many as 39 after Sophie Christopher (Broomfield, CO) found Wick for a layup followed by an Avery Shiring (Yorba Linda, CA) free throw in the final :20 seconds.
Redlands led by as many as 43 in the final quarter of only their second win in the last six meetings against a team that won the SCIAC Regular Season title in 2023 and were Co-Champs in 2024.
The 39-point win is Redlands' largest since they beat Whittier College by 32 in December 2022.
Wick collected her eighth double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. She was also one of four players with four plus assists finishing with five.
Facelo had 18 points and Leila Hosn (Seattle, WA) and Colbi Zorich (Kenmore, WA) scored 12 each. Facelo and Hosn both added four assists and Zorich with another three. Libby Oxciano (Santa Clarita, CA) had a career night with nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from deep.
Redlands will play at home for the first time since November next Wednesday, January 15 when they host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7:00 p.m. inside Currier Gym.
