Redlands Football secures first SCIAC win after beating Claremont-M-S

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Football team (3-2, 1-2 SCIAC) won their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game of the season Saturday afternoon as they beat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) 17-10 for their first win of the series since 2021.

Trailing 3-0 in the second quarter the Bulldogs capped off a six-play, 48-yard drive that was capped off in the end zone after Tobey Schmidt (Tustin, CA) found Kev Markossian (La Verne, CA) for a 32-yard passing touchdown.

The Bulldogs then forced a Stag punt and began their drive on their own 22 yard line. On 2nd and 12 Schmidt found Julien Scarbrough (Loma Linda, CA) for a 32-yard gain as UR moved into CMS' territory at the 48.

On the same set of downs at the 45 the Bulldogs had 3rd and seven when Donovan Maxey-Parler (Sacramento, CA) ran for 10 yards and a first down.

Three plays later Schmidt found Scarbrough again, and after a facemask, the Bulldogs were at the CMS' five. The subsequent play made it 14-3 as Schmidt found Scott Blankenship Jr. (Long Beach, CA) for a five-yard touchdown.

Redlands, still leading by 11, 14-3, early in the fourth quarter, saw the Stags complete a 59-yard touchdown pass that cut the lead to four.

CMS then forced and recovered a fumble that gave them the ball at the Bulldogs' 40. The Maroon and Grey defensive unit held strong though not allowing any points as the game-tying field goal from 29 yards missed left.

Two possessions later Kadyn Butcher (Vancouver, WA) extended the lead to a touchdown, 17-10, following a 29-yard field goal.

The Bulldogs' defense sealed the win as they forced four-straight incompletions with Mosese Afemui (Maui, HI) and Aaron Muniz (Fontana, CA) getting hurries on the Stag quarterback on third and fourth down.

Shepard Cope (Murrieta, CA) had an interception and a co-team-high five total tackles. Jaeden Thorn (Seattle, WA), Jaylen Ephraim (Fontana, CA), and Laurence Williams (Corona, CA) also had five with Thorn and Williams adding a tackle for a loss (TFL). Sami Abdul Majid (Riverside, CA) had 1.5 TFL's and 0.5 a sack. The final 0.5 TFL came from Afemui.

Schmidt got the start at quarterback and went 26-31 for 209 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers. Markossian, Scarbrough, Julian Borrayo (Covina, CA), and Julian Walker (Fontana, CA) all went over 30 yards receiving.

On the ground Mark Mitchell III (Fontana, CA) and Maxey-Parler each had 50 plus yards rushing. Jakai Torres (Baltimore, MD) had 34 as well.

Redlands returns to Ted Runner Stadium on Saturday, October 18 for a 7:00 p.m. match-up with Pomona-Pitzer (P-P) on Homecoming Weekend.
