Redlands Men's Water Polo closes out strong in win at Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team closed out their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) road win by shutting out Whittier College in the fourth quarter of a16-12 road victory Saturday morning.

Tim Jensen scored a hat trike in the first four minutes of the game and Kalani Nelson (Torrance, CA), Brody Nielsen (Capitola, CA), and Camilo Solis (Camarillo, CA) also scored for a quick 6-2 lead for UR after six minutes of play.

In the final second of the first quarter Troy Barker (Roseville, CA) also found the back of the net to make it 7-3 Bulldogs after eight minutes of play.

Redlands held Whittier scoreless for the first six minutes and 40 seconds of the second quarter, while extending their lead to seven, 10-3, thanks to a pair of Ossie Joplin (Kentfield, CA) goals and a score from Matthew Wheeler (Visalia, CA).

Whittier, however, responded with two late first half goals and the first two of the third quarter to cut the lead down to two, 10-8, with 6:22 on the clock.

With the exception of an Adam Lambert (St. Louis, MO) goal at the 5:49 mark, Whittier outscored Redlands 5-1 to begin the third quarter as they fought back to tie the game at 11-11, for the first time since it was tied at one apiece.

Ending the third quarter on a response run was the Bulldogs with two of the final three goals. Joplin and Lambert found the back of the net to make it 13-12 after 24 minutes.

After allowing nine goals in just over nine minutes, the Bulldogs held the Poets scoreless for the final 8:40 to earn the road victory.

Both teams were very efficient offensively as the Poets converted on 50 percent of their 24 shots, while the Bulldogs scored on 80 percent of their 20 shots. Neither team scored on a powerplay though going a combined 0-17.

Jensen had five points on four goals and an assist, Joplin had three goals, two assists, and drew two exclusions. Lambert also drew two exclusions and added three goal contributions.

The Bulldogs remain on the road for a SCIAC game at California Lutheran University next Wednesday, October 15 beginning at 4:00 p.m.
