THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Football team (5-2, 3-2 SCIAC) was out in front of California Lutheran University (CLU) 17-3 in the fourth quarter before conceding 14 points in the final 6:09 before taking down the Kingsmen in double overtime, 30-24.
The Bulldogs' 17 points came off a 34-yard field goal from Kadyn Butcher (Vancouver, WA), a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Jakai Torres (Baltimore, MD), and an eight-yard touchdown reception by Julian Borrayo (Covina, CA) from quarterback Tobey Schmidt (Tustin, CA).
That touchdown pass to Borrayo came with 14:44 on the clock in the fourth quarter. The Bulldog defense then backed it up forcing a turnover on downs at their own 49 yard line.
The following Redlands possession, though, went three-and-out in less than two minutes, which set up a five-minute CLU touchdown drive.
Another three-and-out by the Bulldogs gave the Kingsmen the ball at their 37 with 3:31 to work with. That would be enough for them as they came down the field to tie it at 17-17 forcing overtime.
In extra time CLU scored after getting the ball first. Redlands then responded with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Schmidt to Borrayo.
In the second overtime the Bulldogs got the ball first and earned a first down after two plays thanks to a nine-yard reception by Julian Walker (Fontana, CA) and a three-yard run by Donovan Maxey-Parler (Sacramento, CA).
Following a holding call on CLU, Torres then rushed up the middle for four yards on first and goal. Then on third and eight Schmidt missed his target Walker, but a pass interference call gave them a first down at the two-yard line. The very next play Torres got into the end zone. In the second overtime no point after tries (PAT) are allowed so they went for two and were unsuccessful, giving the Kingsmen a chance to end it with the ball.
For CLU they faced a third-and-seven before throwing the ball to the five-yard line where Skye Taylor (Carson, CA) sealed the win with his second interception of the game as the Bulldogs moved into a tie for first place in the division with CLU.
The Bulldogs totaled 235 yards of total offense with 177 passing and 58 yards rushing. Schmidt was 14-for-21 for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Mark Mitchell III (Fontana, CA) had a big day on the ground and on special teams. He led the team in rushing 40 yards on 12 attempts. He also had four punt returns for 52-yards and three kickoff returns for another 56-yards.
Defensively Aaron Muniz (Fontana, CA) had double digit tackles with 10 (7 Solo/3 Assisted) along with a pair of quarterback hits, Anthony Hall (Seattle, WA) had seven tackles with half a TFL and a sack, Jax Lee (Richland, WA) finished with 2.0 TFL's for a combined eight yards lost, and Taylor with those two interceptions accounted for 43-yards of field position.
Redlands plays their final road regular season game of the season next Saturday, November 1 as they take on the University of La Verne beginning at 1:00pm.
