Redlands Women's Volleyball tests Cal Lutheran early in loss on Halloween

REDLADNS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (12-9, 6-7 SCIAC) took the opening set Friday afternoon against California Lutheran University (CLU) but lost the following three as they dropped their second-to-last Southern California Athletic Conference (SCIAC) home match, 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 14-25, 10-25).

The Bulldogs got off to a slow start in the first set, trailing 6-2. Makenna Vanhofwegen then found Lily Kautai (San Mateo, CA) on the outside for a kill that sparked a 4-0 run. Hannah Hajnal (El Cerrito, CA) had a service ace and an assist, Emily Kitchin (Portland, OR) had a kill and Esha Ball (Fresno, CA) and Emma Murphy (South Jordan, UT) combined on a block.

Down one, 17-16, Murphy and Kitchin then added kills, Kautai had an ace, and the Regals committed a ball handling error that helped the Bulldogs take a three-point lead, 20-17.

CLU got within one point twice the rest of the way, but Lily Houston (Reno, NV) had the final two kills, including a strike on an overpass that ended the set, 25-22.

In the second set Vanhofwegen assisted Avery Aminoff (Alexandria, VA) for a 5-4 UR lead before a 7-0 CLU run, that included three aces, put Redlands behind, 11-5.

Despite the rough start, the Bulldogs came right back and pulled within one, 12-11, as they had an ace from Kautai, an assisted block from Kitchin and Houston, and five total errors by the Regals.

The Bulldogs had the set tied at 15-15 and then at 17-17, but the Reglas put the set away with an 8-1 run as the match was evened at a set apiece.

All the momentum Redlands found in the first set was officially gone as they were down 11, 13-2, in the third set. A 4-0 run, though, did cut the deficit to seven, 13-6, but seven was the closest they got in a 25-14 loss.

In the fourth set the Bulldogs were down two, but another 4-0 stretch gave them an early lead as Paige Sugg (Federal Way, WA) had a kill and an ace.

Just like the second set, Vanhofwegen assisted Aminoff for a 6-5 lead before a 9-0 Regal run put the set and match out of reach.

The Bulldogs hit .244 in the first set. On the other side the Regals improved from .209 to .259, .297, and finished with a .364 in the fourth set.

Houston and Kautai had eight kills each. Vanhofwegen had 15 assists and 10 digs and 'Ale'amaikalani Paiva (Honolulu, HI) had six assists and 15 digs.

Redlands travels to Pasadena to face the California Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon, November 1 at 4:00 p.m.
