THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – After upsetting No. 17 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Friday night, the University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (8-5, 2-3 SCIAC) had to make a trip to California Lutheran University (CLU) Saturday evening where they were unable to maintain momentum from the upset as they fell 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-18).
Beginning the first set the Bulldogs trailed by three, 6-3, before putting together a 5-1 run, which included two kills for Emma Murphy (South Jordan, UT), two aces from Lily Kautai (San Mateo, CA), and an assisted block from Lily Houston (Reno, NV) and Murphy.
Following a kill by the Regals, they would end the first set on a 16-11 run as they took the opening set, 25-20.
In a bounce back situation in the second set the Bulldogs never led as they fell behind 2-0.
After a slow start in the second that they were never able to overcome, the Bulldogs won three of the first four points in the third thanks to a pair of attacking errors, a kill by Esha Ball (Fresno, CA), and a combo block from Murphy and Ball.
A Houston kill gave Redlands the lead, 5-4, before an 11-1 Regal run made it a nine-point deficit, 15-6. Redlands was then gifted a response run as CLU committed four-straight errors followed by Makenna Vanhofwegen (Buckeye, AZ) assisting Ball to cap off a 5-0 run that reduced the deficit to four, 15-11.
Despite the late push the U of R would lose five of the final six points as they lost the set 25-18.
Vanhofwegen and Hannah Hajnal (El Cerrito, CA) each had 11 assists. 'Ale'amaikalani Paiva (Honolulu, HI) had a game-high 17 digs.
Redlands returns to Currier Gym Tuesday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m. as they host the California Institute of Technology.
