REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Basketball team (4-0) stayed perfect on the season following a 106-92 win over Schreiner University, their third 100-point game to begin the season.
After struggling in first halves in the opening two games, the Bulldogs have found their early offense with double-digit leads coming in the first 20 minutes in each of their last two games as they led by 10 plus for the final nine minutes of the first half against the Mountaineers. Jake Hlywiak (Valencia, CA) made a three-pointer off a Cam Brown (Bakersfield, CA) assist to begin what would be 27-16 Bulldog run that helped give them a 17-point lead, 53-36, at the half.
The lead grew to as many as 22, 65-43, with 15:59 on the clock following a Jhace Boston (Bakersfield, CA) free throw, but the Mountaineers cut the lead down to 12 two and a half minutes later.
It seemed like the Bulldogs would be fine until the 4:40 mark of the second half when Schreiner got out on a fastbreak to make it a nine-point game, 87-78.
Brown then found Derek Sangster (Sunnyvale, CA) for a three and Nathan Mattera (Fontana, CA) assisted Brown for a jumper in the paint, and the lead was back to five possessions, 92-78.
Schreiner got the deficit back to eight with 1:27 to play, but Donovan Ware (Palmdale, CA) knocked down a triple and Omari Ferguson (Chicago, Ill.), Boston, and Ware all made both of their free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Boston (19), Hlywiak (16), Ferguson (16), Ware (13), Sangster (12), and Lucas Gordon (San Marcos, CA) (10) all finished in double figures. Brown had an all-around night with eight points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Sangster was also a rebound shy of a double double with nine.
On the night Redlands had 19 second chance points, eight fastbreak points, 46 points in the paint, 20 points off turnovers, and another 39 points coming from the bench.
Willamette University is in Redlands for a Friday night game this coming November 21 at 7 p.m.
