REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Football team (6-3, 4-3 SCIAC) scored the first points of the game thanks to a 57-yard Mark Mitchell III (Fontana, CA) touchdown run, but Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) responded with 28 unanswered points to defeat the Bulldogs, 28-14 on senior day.
In the second quarter the Stags scored three touchdowns, finishing drives of 65, 58, and 57 yards.
With nine minutes remaining in the game, Laurence Williams (Corona, CA) picked up an interception at the Redlands 48 yard line to get the Bulldogs possession back with 8:50 on the clock trailing by 21.
After the pick the Bulldogs went nine plays for 52 yards in less than four minutes. Tobey Schmidt (Tustin, CA) found Jack Ryan (San Diego, CA) for a 21-yard gain on the second play of the drive. Schmidt then ran for eight yards and completed a pass to Julian Walker (Fontana, CA) for 16 yards to put the ball inside the CMS 10.
Following a pass interference call on CMS and two runs for a total of a yard, Schmidt connected with Scott Clark for a two-yard touchdown reception to cut the deficit to 14, 28-14, with 5:14 left.
The onside kick, however, was downed and CMS took control at the Redlands 47. On the drive Aaron Muniz (Fontana, CA) had a tackle after only a gain of a yard and Aleks Wojcik (San Diego, CA) made a stop on 3rd and 12 to force a punt after a 59-second possession.
Schmidt then found Walker to start the ensuing drive for 13 yards. He then dropped it off to Donovan Maxey-Parler (Sacramento, CA) for another seven. The big play came on a long completion to Julian Borrayo (Covina, CA) out to the CMS 49.
With a pair of incomplete passes and a short run, the Bulldogs faced 4th and 7 with less than three minutes to play. On the fourth down call Schmidt was sacked for a loss of seven turning it over on downs, which allowed the Stags to run out the clock on the following possession.
Mitchell finished the game with 114 yards rushing, which was 122 more net yards than the rest of the Bulldogs combined. Through the air Borrayo had 57 yards and both Walker and Ryan had 29.
On defense Jax Lee (Richland, WA), Tate Keddington (Boise, ID), Wojcik, Williams, Mosese Afemui (Maui, HI), Muniz, and Andrew Placido (Hayward, CA) each had a tackle for a loss (TFL) and Javier Sandoval (San Bernardino, CA) had a game and career-high eight total tackles.
With the loss the Bulldogs finish second in their division, which means they will host the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer in the other division next Saturday, November 15 at 1:05 p.m. inside Ted Runner Stadium.
