LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team (7-1, 1-0 SCIAC) won their fifth-straight game, all by double digits, after taking down Wesleyan University (Conn.) 64-31 to open the D3hoops.com Classic.
Following a scoring drought of nearly three minutes to begin the game Leila Hosn (Seattle, WA) sparked the Redlands offense by finding Colbi Zorich (Woodinville, WA) inside the paint for the Bulldogs' first two points.
Redlands quickly turned those points into an 11-2 run to go in front by seven, 11-4, with just over a minute remaining in the opening quarter.
During the run AJ Wick (Henderson, NV) had six points, Teagan McIlroy (Phoenix, AZ) with two, and Hosn another, while Hosn, McIlroy, and Andrea Perkins (Seal Beach, CA) picked up assists.
The opening possession of the second quarter the Cardinals pulled within three, but a Wick three-point play doubled the U of R lead to six. Following a pair of Wesleyan free throws, Perkins found Alex Facelo (San Jose, CA) from deep and Facelo returned the favor, finding Perkins inside for a jumper in the paint.
The Bulldogs took their first double-digit lead of the game after four unanswered from Hosn and a defensive effort that held the Cardinals scoreless for the final three plus minutes, which allowed them to take a 23-13 lead into the half.
Redlands maintained their double figure lead the entire third period. Olivia McIntyre (Spokane, WA) gave the Bulldogs their first 20-point lead, 35-15, with 3:02 left in the quarter after she converted on a pair at the line.
In the final quarter the Bulldogs led by as many as 34. Aliyah Anderson (Oceanside, CA) had a quarter-high seven points, while Hosn added four, Zorich and Monica Villanueva (Harbor City, CA) with three, and the trio of Avery Shiring (Yorba Linda, CA), Lily Bingaman (Folsom, CA), and Libby Oxciano (Santa Clarita, CA) each recording two.
Hosn finished three assists shy of a triple double posting 13 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists. Wick had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Defensively the Bulldogs held Wesleyan to 16.4% shooting from the field and 14.3% from three-point territory. They then added 11 points off turnovers, 11 second chance points, 24 bench points, 32 points in the paint, and nine fastbreak points.
Redlands completes their non-conference and 2025 schedule tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday, December 30 at 12:00 p.m. (noon) against RV Bridgewater State University.
