Redlands Women's Basketball takes down Occidental on Senior Night

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team (11-12, 6-8 SCIAC) took down Occidental College, 72-60, on senior night inside Currier Gym Saturday night as they honored Leaya McKinney (Sedalia, CO) who finished with five points and seven rebounds.

It was a great first quarter with Colbi Zorich (Kenmore, WA) scoring eight points, Leila Hosn (Seattle, WA) with two, four rebounds and four assists, and AJ Wick (Henderson, NV) adding six points in a quarter where the U of R held an eight-point lead, 21-13, after 10 minutes.

The lead grew to 12, 27-15, in the second following a Hosn jumper that Alex Facelo (San Jose, CA) assisted on, but the Tigers ended the half on a 15-5 run to make it a two-point game, 32-30, after 20 minutes.

The lead was one or two possessions for most of the third quarter before Zorich scored three quick points to extend it to nine, 46-37, with 2:53 to play.

Occidental closed to within five with :35 seconds remaining, but Wick took advantage of a Carly Hicks (Portland, OR) offensive rebound to put Redlands up by seven, 50-43, at the end of three.

The Bulldogs broke things open in the fourth when they shot 42 percent from the field making nine free throws, while they held the Tigers to 28 percent shooting and only four free throw attempts. Krista Karban (Murrieta, CA) played six important minutes and scored six points.

Wick went for 22 points and 14 rebounds. Zorich had 17 points thanks to nine made free throws. Hosn finished a point, one assist, and three rebounds away from a triple-double.

With the win the Bulldogs tie Pomona-Pitzer for the fifth and final Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament spot.

Redlands travels to Chapman University this Wednesday, February 19 for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off in Orange.
