REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team opened up their 2025 season Tuesday night taking down Stanton University 6-1 inside the Verdieck Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs opened things up sweeping doubles to go in front 1-0.
Doubles took less than an hour to complete with
Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India) and
Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) rolling 6-1 at No. 3.
Meagan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) and
Deja Brown (San Diego, CA) followed at No. 1 cruising 6-1 and
Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) and
Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) would wrap up things 6-3 at No. 2.
The momentum carried over into singles with the Maroon and Grey taking five of six matches. Whalen rolled at No. 5 grabbing the second point winning 6-0, 6-0. Kumar followed at No. 6 taking the opening set 6-1 before seeing her opponent retire after going in front 3-0.
Brady faced a similar situation at No. 2 taking the first set 6-1 and was then up 5-0 in the second before seeing her opponent retire. This would be the clinch for the Bulldogs. Deng had a test at No. 1 surrendering four games but would sweep 6-1, 6-3. Stanton got on the scoreboard at No. 5 with O'Brien falling 6-0, 6-4 but that would be the lone point picked up by the Elk as Brown would pick up the sixth point at No. 3 winning 6-2, 6-3.
"The women had some early exhibitions that were good tests for us preparing us for this opening match," stated Head Coach
Mike Longanecker. "They used that experience against Stanton and played some flawless tennis. This is really going to help build confidence going into their first Division III match with Brandeis."
Redlands has a quick turn around hosting No. 27 Brandeis University on Thursday, February 20 beginning at 4:00pm.
