REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team (10-11, 5-7 SCIAC) dropped an 83-73 decision to California Lutheran University (CLU) at home inside Currier Gym Saturday evening as the athletic department celebrated 50 years of women's varsity athletics at the school.
The Bulldogs and Regals were tied four times in the opening quarter as CLU held a slim lead, 23-21. AJ Wick (Henderson, NV) and Leila Hosn (Seattle, WA) each had seven points on a combined six-for-nine shooting.
After a three from the Regals in the first minute of the second quarter the Bulldogs found themselves down five, 26-21. Wick then scored four points and Hosn made a three to reclaim the lead for the U of R three minutes later.
The lead grew to as many as four and Redlands held it as late as the 1:37 mark when Leaya McKinney (Sedalia, CO) converted a three-point play. CLU, however, finished the half with the final four points as they maintained their two-point lead from the first period.
The wheels started to wobble in the third for the Bulldogs when they trailed by six, but Alex Facelo (San Jose, CA) would knock down a big triple to cut it to three. Wick quickly followed with five straight that got the Maroon and Grey within one, 54-53, with 4:45 on the clock.
But despite the strong run Redlands would head into the fourth down a couple of possessions, 63-57.
Through four and a half minutes to begin the fourth quarter the Bulldogs managed only six points and fell behind by nine, 72-63. They were able to cut it down to three, but the Regals quickly extended it back as the two teams split the season series.
Wick finished with 24 points, 17 rebounds, and six assists. Hosn added 20 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Wick's 17 rebounds pushes her past the 500-rebound mark in her career.
Redlands remains at home for a match-up with the University of La Verne this Wednesday, February 12 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
