REDLANDS, Calif. – With a doubleheader split the University of Redlands Baseball team (10-6, 4-2 SCIAC) took their three-game series with No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer dropping game one 6-1 before run-ruling the Sagehens 11-0 in game two.
Game 1 (L, 6-1)
It was a well-pitched game by the Sagehen starter Wiessinger, as he held the Bulldogs to just one run.
The lone inning the Bulldogs had to try and mount a comeback came in the fifth when Nate Miller (San Jose, CA) and Gabriel Ceja (Long Beach, CA) both reached to begin the inning thanks to a single and a hit by pitch.
After a strikeout and fielder's choice that put runners on the corners with two outs, Luke De Vries (Irvine, CA) got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a single. The following batter, though, left the tying runs on base.
Coming on in relief of starter Erik Radder (San Diego, CA) was Tanner Currier (Brawley, CA) who finished off the final 3.1 innings, allowing only three hits and no runs. Miller finished 1-for-4 scoring the lone run and De Vries was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Game 2 (W, 11-0 | 7-Innings)
In a dominant win in game two, thanks to a shutout thrown by starter Nathan Buchan (Mercer Island, WA), the Bulldogs posted their first shutout of the Sagehens since 2017.
The game broke open for the Bulldogs in the third inning with seven runs on four hits all coming with two outs. Mark Kirkland and Miller started off the rally with walks.
Head Coach Aaron Holley then put in Rylan Morris (Fullerton, CA) as a pinch-hitter who drove a triple into right center plating both runners.
Ian Umscheid (Beaumont, CA) then came in as a pinch-hitter and he doubled to center to prolong the inning after Morris scored on a wild pitch. The fourth and fifth runs came on a second wild pitch and an RBI-single by De Vries. The second big hit of the inning came when Tyler Preece (Bellevue, WA) drove in two with the fourth hit of the inning.
The final four runs of the game came on a Kaiya Saito (Bellevue, WA) fielder's choice in the fourth, a two-run single up the middle by Jake Burgess (Riverside, CA), and another fielder's choice, this time it was Miller beating out a double play.
Preece reached base four times going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's. Umscheid reached all three times he came to the plate finishing with a base hit and a pair of walks. Preece and Umscheid were joined by Burgess with two RBI's, who also drew two walks and scored a run.
On the mound Buchan got the win, his fourth of the season after throwing a complete game shutout along with eight strikeouts. His eight strikeouts are the most for him since striking out 10 in February 2023 against the University of Puget Sound.
Following a week's break, Redlands will begin a three-game series with Franklin and Marshall College on Saturday, March 8 with a single game set for 2:30 p.m.
