REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team grinded out a 4-3 win over Colorado College Monday afternoon in a big regional match-up that propels the Bulldogs to a 4-4 record.
Redlands found themselves down a point after doubles. The lone win came at No. 2 from
Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) and
Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) who won 6-4. The other two matches went to the Tigers with
Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) and
Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India) falling 6-2 at No. 3 and
Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) and
Deja Brown (San Diego, CA) getting stunned 7-5 at the top spot.
This did not deter the Maroon and Grey though bouncing back with four of six singles matches to come from behind. Deng found her rhythm playing No. 1 singles cruising 6-2, 6-2 putting UR on the scoreboard. Brady followed with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 2 putting Redlands in front. Then Whelan made it 3-1 following a pair of tiebreak wins 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4) at No. 4.
Colorado College rebounded though grabbing a point at No. 3 with Brown falling 6-3, 6-4 and then picking up the game-tying point at No. 5 as O'Brien would fall 6-4, 6-2.
The decisive match came from Kumar at No. 6 who collected the biggest win of her career pulling out a three-setter. She took the opening set 6-4 and then dropped the second 6-2. The final set she dominated winning 6-1 handing the Bulldogs the clinch.
