REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Tennis team came away with their biggest win on the season Wednesday night upsetting No. 13 Amherst College 4-3 inside the Verdieck Tennis Center.
The doubles point proved crucial for the Maroon and Grey as they would get two of the three matches.
MJ Abarca (San Diego, CA) and
Cooper Whittington (Lake Oswego, OR) grabbed the first point at No. 2 winning 6-3 and
Dominic Anderson (Brisbane, Australia) and
Gustavo Marcanth (Redondo Beach, CA) would grab the clinch at No. 3 winning 6-4. The last match on came at the top spot from
Jack Fanshawe (Brisbane, Australia) and
Vitomir Petcov (Portland, OR) who would get edged in a breaker 7-6 (2).
Redlands carried this momentum into singles taking three of the six matches. Amherst tied things up at No. 6 as Whittington would fall in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. The Mammoths then went in front following another straight sets decision at No. 2 as Marcanth would fall 6-2, 6-2. The Bulldogs stopped the run at No. 5 thanks to
Jack Hinkle (Bountiful, UT) who would grind out a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win leveling things at 2-2. Anderson followed with a huge three-setter at the top spot using an early lead to win 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 putting UR back on top 3-2.
Josh Davydov (Bellevue, WA) was the next match off and he would get the decisive clinching point at No. 4 pulling out a 7-6, 7-5 win handing the Bulldogs the upset. Petcov finished off the matches at No. 3 and nearly came away with another point for Redlands but could not pull out a three-setter falling 7-5, 3-6, 4-6.
Redlands remains with this tough stretch of matches this Friday, March 21 when they host Whitman College beginning at 3:00pm inside the Verdieck Tennis Center.
