ORANGE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Softball team (19-5, 5-2 SCIAC) was shut out for only the second time all season as they lost 2-0 in the first game of their series with Chapman University Friday afternoon.
Each team scattered six hits with the Bulldogs' best scoring opportunities coming in the fifth and sixth innings when they totaled four of them.
In the fifth Avery Provenzano (San Jose, CA) led off the inning with a single to right field. A fielder's choice advanced her to second and put Isabella Culp (Bayliss, CA) on first as the tying run. After a strikeout and another fielder's choice for out number two, Paige Messenlehner (Fresno, CA) singled to the shortstop, which loaded the bases. The following hitter, though, would strike out to end the frame.
Then in the sixth Katlyn Gandara (Whittier, CA) singled to begin the inning and with one out Kassidy Long (Hemet, CA) doubled into the right center field gap. The Bulldogs were kept off the board, however, as a groundout to third and a pop up stranded two more runners.
The top three in the order had four of the six hits. Gandara made the start and went six innings with only one earned run allowed.
Redlands and Chapman play a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, Saturday, March 29 at The Field of Dreams.
