REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team nearly came away with the win against No. 28 Williams College Friday afternoon but would get edged 4-3 inside the Verdieck Tennis Center wrapping up their non-conference schedule.
The Bulldogs fell behind after doubles as the Ephs grabbed two of three matches. The lone win for the U of R came at No. 2 from
Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) and
Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) who pulled out a 6-4 win.
Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) and
Deja Brown (San Diego, CA) would fall 6-2 at the top-spot and
Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) and
Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India) would drop 6-3 at No. 3.
In singles Redlands put together a valiant comeback picking up three wins and nearly a fourth. Deng bounced back with a solid 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 1 and Whelan held on for a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5. Williams would pick up their second and third points at No. 6 as Kumar would fall 6-4, 6-2 and Brown at No. 3 who would get broken in each set in a 6-4, 6-4 decision.
Redlands tied things up thanks to Brady who would go the distance at No. 2. She pulled out an early breaker 7-6 (3) but would drop 6-2 in the second. She would shake it off though storming back to go in front 4-1 in the third before taking the match 6-3.
The last match was O'Brien at No. 4. She came away with an early lead 6-4 but saw her opponent level things with a 6-4 second set. O'Brien was able to get out in front slightly serving for the match at 5-4 but failed to hold eventually dropping the next three-games, 7-5.
Redlands returns to the courts Tuesday night, April 1 when they host No. 2 Claremont-M-S beginning at 5:00pm.
