LOS ANGELES – The University of Redlands Women's Water Polo team (1-12, 0-1 SCIAC) officially kicked off their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) schedule with a strong defensive effort in an 11-5 road loss at Occidental College Wednesday night.
The Bulldogs' defense was exceptional to start the game. They held the Tigers to only one goal over the first twelve minutes as the game was deadlocked at one thanks to an Alyssa Sorrell (Highland, CA) goal. That same period there was a shift in the Tigers favor as they put away six goals. Redlands managed to add another to stay within striking distance thanks to Lucia Notaro (Thousand Oaks, CA), but the U of R faced an uphill battle trailing 6-2 at the break.
Redlands put together a rally in the third quarter with Christine Chua (Arcadia, CA) and Katelyn Dwelley (Wildomar, CA) contributing goals that ended the Tiger run and brought the Maroon and Grey within two, 6-4.
A 4-0 Occidental run, though, put the game away for them as the deficit grew to its largest at six, 10-4. The final Bulldog goal came from Notaro as she ended the night with a brace.
Adding to her two goals for Notaro were three drawn exclusions and a steal. Sorrell, Mobley, and Emma Parker (Yucaipa, CA) also drew exclusions. In goal Aubree Nabors (Conroe, TX) made four saves and took away a possession.
Redlands comes home to the Thompson Aquatic Center for the first time this season this Saturday, March 8 facing off against Whittier College beginning at 7:00 p.m.
