REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Tennis team found themselves ahead of No. 26 University of Mary Washington following doubles Wednesday afternoon but due to the inclement weather the match was halted and has now been canceled.
The Bulldogs got off to a strong start picking up a point after sweeping doubles.
Vitomir Petcov (Portland, OR) and
Jack Fanshawe (Brisbane, Australia) got things started with a lopsided 6-1 win at No. 1.
Zac Nakajima (Beaverton, OR) and
Gustavo Marcanth (Redondo Beach, CA) then followed at No. 3 winning 6-2. The last match on came at No. 2 as
MJ Abarca (San Diego, CA) and
Cooper Whittington (Lake Oswego, OR) would grind out a 7-5 victory.
Up 1-0 heading into singles the Bulldogs were poised for a ranked win against the Eagles but they would come up short as the rain came through stopping the match forcing it to be canceled.
Before everything was halted Redlands was up in four matches with Marcanth leading 6-4, 2-2 at No. 1,
Jack Hinkle (Bountiful, Utah) up 7-5 at No. 3, Fanshawe up 6-4 at No. 4 and Abarca up 6-4 at No. 5. Whittington was in a tiebreaker at No. 6 and Petcov found himself down at No. 2 2-6, 3-2.
The Bulldogs have a quick turnaround hosting No. 29 Christopher Newport inside the Verdieck Tennis Center Thursday, March 6 beginning at 11:00am.
