REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team collected another win on the season Friday night beating UC Santa Cruz 6-1 inside the Verdieck Tennis Center, which included the first collegiate singles win for
Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India).
The Bulldogs swept doubles grabbing the first point on the night.
Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) and
Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) dominated at No. 2 winning 6-2 followed by
Deja Brown (San Diego, CA) and
Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) taking their match at No. 1 6-2 as well. The sweep came at No. 3 from Kumar and
Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) who grinded out a 7-5 win.
In singles the Maroon and Grey took five of six matches. Brown added the first point at No. 3 winning 6-0, 6-2, Deng followed with a solid 6-2, 6-1 win at the top spot, and the clinch came at No. 2 from Brady who would give up five games combined to win 6-1, 6-4.
Whelan kept the run going with a break in each set at No. 4 winning 6-3, 6-3. O'Brien would fall in a three-setter at No. 5. She would drop a 7-6 decision in the first set but would grind out a 7-5 win in the second forcing a tiebreaker, which she would ultimately drop 10-7. The last match on came at No. 6 from Kumar who edged her opponent 7-6 (5) in the first frame before rolling with the momentum in the second winning 6-2.
Redlands returns to the court on Tuesday, March 11 when they host No. 3 Emory University beginning at 2:00pm.
