Redlands Women's Water Polo drops heartbreaker in overtime to Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Water Polo team (1-22, 0-11 SCIAC) lost an overtime thriller, 14-13, at Whittier College Saturday morning.

Emma Parker (Yucaipa, CA) scored twice in the first quarter and Alyssa Sorrell (Highland, CA) added a goal of her own as the Bulldogs held a 3-2 lead after eight minutes.

In the second the Poets scored six times taking an 8-6 lead into the half. The three Bulldog goals in the period came from Sorrell, Christine Chua (Arcadia, CA), and another from Teagan May (Carlsbad, CA) in the final minute.

After a rough second quarter, Redlands flipped the script shutting out the Poets in the third and putting away five past the WC keeper putting the U of R in front 11-8 heading into the fourth. The five goals came from Sorrell, Parker (2x), May, and Aubree Nabors (Conroe, TX) with a second remaining on the clock.

The Poets scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter going back in front 12-11 with 3:50 left in the game. Anika Lundbaek (San Anselmo, CA), though, tied the game on a powerplay :40 seconds later.

In the closing seconds of the game Redlands again found themselves trailing by one, 13-12. But like she did to end the third quarter, Nabors scored with a second left in the game to force overtime.

Both sides failed to score in the first three-minute period, but with 2:07 on the clock in the second extra session the Poets scored what would be the game-winning goal.

Parker finished with four goals and a steal, Sorrell had a hat trick, May had two goals, a drawn exclusion, and a steal.

Redlands ends their 2025 season at the Thompson Aquatic Center (TAC) on Wednesday, April 16 at 7:00 p.m. when they host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
