REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team took down No. 18 Caltech 4-3 on the road Tuesday night improving to 7-9, 3-2 SCIAC. They have also won two in a row both by a one-point margin.
It was a solid start for the Bulldogs following doubles sweeping all three spots to go in front 1-0.
Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) and
Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India) rolled 6-0 at No. 3 to give UR an early advantage.
Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) and
Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) then faced a tough test at No. 2 but managed to pull out a 7-5 victory giving the Maroon and Grey the early point. The last match on came at the top spot from
Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) and
Deja Brown (San Diego, CA) who would pull out a 7-6 (10-0) victory to complete the sweep.
In singles it was tight throughout. O'Brien dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 4 with CIT getting on the scoreboard for the first time. Deng put UR back on top with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1. Brady was the third point for Redlands at No. 2 but needed three sets to do it. She rolled 6-1 in the opening frame but was blanked in the second set 6-0 before pulling out a 6-3 third extending the lead to 3-1.
The Beavers got a point back and stopped the run at No. 6 as Kumar would fall 7-5, 6-3. This made it a one-point match, 3-2. CIT carried this momentum into No. 5 leveling the match at 3-3 as Whelan would fall in three-sets. The opening frame went to the Beavers 6-4, but Whelan battled back to level things at 6-2. In the third it was back and forth early but Anika Arora would be able to get a late break to win 6-4.
It all came down to Brown at No. 3 and she came up clutch. She dropped an opening first set breaker 7-6 (3) but fought to extend the match winning the second set 6-3. In the third she raced out in front 3-0 quickly before seeing her opponent rattle off four straight games to go in front 4-3. She settled down to hold serve at 4-4 and carried that momentum into a break and another hold to pull off the 6-4 win.
Redlands wraps up their regular season this Saturday, April 26 when they travel to Eagle Rock to take on Occidental College beginning at 3:00pm.
