REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Baseball team (22-13, 11-8 SCIAC) dropped their series opener to Chapman University, 6-2, after conceding two unearned runs and another four runs that did not require hits to score Friday afternoon at The Yard.
Chapman scored twice in the third after an error extended the inning allowing two unearned runs to score that made it 2-0 Panthers.
In the fifth the Panthers added another four runs thanks to a pair of bases loaded walks, a bases loaded hit by pitch, and a sacrifice fly that pushed the lead to 6-0.
The next half inning Rylan Morris (Fullerton, CA) was able to fight off a two-strike fastball into center field for a sacrifice fly that scored Nate Miller (San Jose, CA). That run, though, was the lone score for the Maroon and Grey before Luke De Vries (Irvine, CA) hit a two-out single to left in the ninth that plated Kaiya Saito (Bellevue, WA) for the final score of 6-2.
De Vries, Ian Umscheid (Beaumont, CA) and Miller each recorded a pair of hits. Aziz Bishop (Baltimore, MD) threw 1.1 scoreless innings. Kethan Efron (Henderson, NV), Kyler Bacosa (San Jose, CA), and Phillip Economos (Huntington Beach, CA) all added one shutout inning each.
The two sides play a doubleheader in Orange tomorrow, Saturday, April 19 with first pitch of game one set for 11:00 a.m.
