Box Score PASADENA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Tennis team found themselves trailing after doubles against No. 30 Caltech Sunday afternoon but came away with a clean sweep in singles to beat the Beavers 6-1 to end their regular season.
Redlands enters the SCIAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed posting a 12-5, 6-1 SCIAC record. They will now faceoff against Caltech again on Thursday, May 1 in the first of two semi-finals with match time TBD.
The Bulldogs saw Caltech jump out in front quickly taking two of three doubles matches to grab the early point. The lone win for the Maroon and Grey came from the No. 3 duo of
Josh Davydov (Bellevue, WA) and
Vitomir Petcov (Portland, OR) who pulled out a 6-3 win.
Due to
Jack Fanshawe (Brisbane, Australia) unable to compete with travel back to Australia his doubles partner
Dominic Anderson (Brisbane, Australia) was paired up with
Gustavo Marcanth (Redondo Beach, CA) at No. 1 and they would drop 6-3.
Then at No. 2
MJ Abarca (San Diego, CA) and
Cooper Whittington (Lake Oswego, OR) faced off against a tough pairing also falling 6-3.
In singles the U of R rolled but had two matches go the distance. Whittington filled into the No. 6 slot for Fanshawe and looked really good taking his match in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 putting Redlands on the scoreboard. Anderson followed with a straight sets win at the top spot 6-3, 6-4 putting the Bulldogs on top. After that they continued the momentum with
Jack Hinkle (Bountiful, UT) grabbing a break in each set to win 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 followed by Davydov at No. 4 who collected the clinch with a tight 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory.
The last two matches on came from Marcanth at No. 2 who came from a set down to win 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5) and Petcov at No. 3 who came from a set down and had to play two tiebreakers pulling out the clean sweep for the U of R 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (4).
