LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team held on for a 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon beating Occidental College on the road 4-3 to finish off their regular season 8-9, 4-2 SCIAC.
Three of their last four wins have come via a 4-3 score and all coming within Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play.
Redlands earned the early doubles point following a sweep at all three spots.
Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) and
Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India) rolled 6-0 at No. 3 and
Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) and
Deja Brown (San Diego, CA) would come away with a 6-3 win at the top spot. The last match on was at No. 2 with
Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) and
Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) pulling out a 7-6 (3) victory helping to keep the momentum with the Maroon and Grey.
It got a lot tighter in singles with both teams taking three matches. Kumar dropped in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 and Brown would fall 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 allowing Oxy to grab two points. The other point for the Tigers came at No. 2 with Brady getting edged 7-5, 7-5.
Deng was able to pull out a win at No. 1 taking her match in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 moving the score to 3-2. Two matches were left on court and they both needed three-sets. O'Brien grabbed the biggest win of her career at No. 5 coming from a set down to pick up a huge point for the U of R 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) deadlocking the match at 3-3. The last match on was Whelan at No. 4 who also came from a set down to clinch the road win 3-6, 6=3, 7-6 (4).
Redlands enters the SCIAC Tournament next week as the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on the road at 4 PM on Wednesday, April 30. More information on the tournament will be available on goredlands.com.
